to the 7th century, like Moudon - Milden or Jorat - Jurten, and could thus
originate in the Merovingian upper class. On the other hand, the German Waadt
for Vaud is not older than the 12th century.
The Alamanni did not reach the Lake of Biel before the 9th century. Locras -
Liischerz or Moritpotton - Biittenberg date from the same epoch, but expli¬
cations of such names can be rather arduous. The same is true of the North of
the Fribourg canton with Guin - Diidingen or Belfaux - Gumscherr, only the
name of the region Üchtland (better Üechtland) - Oetlandia (— Ouèt-) < *Okto-
landia goes further back, with a variant *Oktilandia > Ochtland. When in the
8th-9th centuries the Alamannic immigration took place in the Upper Valais,
the original archaic Romance idiom left traces with Brig or Visp whose short i
was normally adopted in German. Later on, Romance-Germanic interferences
were mostly the work of chanceries. Our attempt to elucidate such a bureau¬
cratic interference concerns Tramelan - Tremlingen.
