Summary
The Integration of non-Germanic Saints’ Names into the
Late Medieval German System of First Names
The integration of saints’ and biblical names into the German name system of
the Late Middle Ages took place on two levels: on the cultural-spiritual level
and on the linguistic level. The very length of time which was needed for the
successful integration of the foreign names into the German name system is a
clear indicator of the cultural and spiritual resistance which stood in the way
of a fast diffusion of these names, which, though they were mostly well-
known from liturgy and other, more popular usage, were hitherto not used as
given names.
The study of the integration of these names on the linguistic level leads to
two results: 1.: In many cases the linguistic integration did not take place in
the respective region, but in a linguistically different, sometimes far-away
area. 2.: Graphemic differences between names of saints in the date-lines of
medieval documents and names of real persons demonstrate that the name of a
saint still has another, higher status than the name of a human being.
